At the dawn of the motor car era there were many interpretations of what exactly a car should be. Style, design, and engineering where just a few of the concerns, the propulsion was a critical factor as cars were running on electricity, gasoline, springs and even a few brave designs on compressed air. Some worked, some didn’t, but one method had proven itself on America’s railroads, steam. The ability to move hundreds of thousands of pounds with steam power translated easily into moving a car, and no one was better than Francis E. and Freeland O. Stanley. Building their first car in 1887, the Stanley brothers refined their deigns and amazed the world with the reliability and speed of their steam powered car.
