One of the rarest and most desirable woodie station wagons

The Monarch was one of Ford’s attempts to market Mercury cars in Canada. The Monarch was in existence between 1946 and 1957, although it reappeared again in 1959 and lasted through 1961. While they largely mirrored their American Mercury counterparts, Monarchs did have unique, Canadian-market-specific trim, most notably, the grill design. In 1950 sales for all models of Monarch cars totaled only 6,056 cars. Of those, a mere 43 wood-trimmed “woodie” station wagons were produced. Woodies are exceedingly rare today, and it is believed that only three are known to exist.

This stunning example was the recipient of a comprehensive, painstaking, 3-year, 4,000-hour nut and bolt restoration by well-known restorer Lon Krueger in Scottsdale, AZ. No expense was spared in an effort to make this rare car one of the best woodie station wagons in the world. To that end, an exhaustive search for the correct grain wood that the factory used was undertaken. It was eventually located and acquired for the restoration. Although the body is steel, the doors and quarter panels are framed with quilted maple, with the inset paneling made of mahogany. The mahogany paneling continues into the interior with sheets of exotic wood being used for the door panels, and on the fold-down tailgate. The mirror-gloss blue paint and gleaming chrome trim complement the exquisite woodwork. The level of detail and craftsmanship employed during the restoration is unsurpassed.

Under the hood is impeccable and features Ford’s famous “Flathead” V-8 engine mated to a 3-speed manual transmission with highly-desirable optional overdrive.  Other factory options include push button radio, heater, trim rings and wide whitewall tires.

Seldomly offered for sale, this exceptional Monarch woodie station wagon presents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the rarest, most desirable and beautifully restored cars of this type in the world.
