The Mercury Cougar was set up to be marketed into the upscale realm from day one, yet there was an even more exclusive package available. Known as the XR-7, this version came complete with extensive deluxe standard equipment, and the 1969 edition offered here has everything you could ask for: R-code ram-air 428 Cobra Jet power, factory air conditioning, a power convertible top, handling equipment and leather interior appointments. The Cougar itself had underwent some styling changes for this model season, and one hot option was the 428 CI ram-air Cobra Jet V-8 engine, factory-rated at 335 HP and 440 lb-ft of torque. With a Holley 4-barrel carburetor underneath the door-equipped air cleaner, this massive Ford engine was made to go. Nonetheless, highway manners were still possible thanks to the heavy-duty C6 automatic transmission and a 3.25 limited-slip differential. The car also received a competition-type handling package that included power steering and power front disc brakes. Painted in Wimbledon White with black hood displacement callouts, a centered cougar graphic and a matching white top, the interior is done in saddle tan material, featuring front bucket seats, center console with floor shift, factory air conditioning, AM radio, power windows, power top and burl-wood applique on many surfaces. These XR-7 models also came with full instrumentation, a special light and warning group, 3-spoke steering wheel, rocker switch panel, deluxe door panels and driver’s-side remote outside mirror. In addition to exterior and interior badges, as well as premium brightwork, this cat rides on styled steel wheels with polished trim rings and BF Goodrich raised white-letter tires. How cool was the XR-7? James Bond drove one in the 1969 film, “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” Sold with the factory invoice, a Marti Report, Cougar Club of America Western Nationals provenance and miscellaneous receipts, this beautiful Cougar convertible is perhaps one of the most luxurious of all big-block pony cars.
